In 1997, and with the initial support of the German Investment & Development Company (DEG), Kolbenschmidt together with Shanghai Piston Works set up Kolbenschmidt Shanghai Pistons Co., Ltd., thus becoming the very first well-known pistons manufacturer from Germany to become partner in a joint venture in the Middle Kingdom.
This was followed in 2001 by a second joint venture, this time the notable partner is Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC). Together, the partners manufacture passenger car and commercial vehicle pistons as well as pistons for tractors and motorcycles destined for the Chinese market.
