High-pressure Die Cast Cylinder BlocksHigh-pressure die-casting, which is especially suited for the production of low-complexity open-deck engine blocks - not least for reasons of economy, is mainly used for high-volume series production. The factors in its favor are not only the quick filling of the die, which only takes a few milliseconds and hence the possibility of achieving short cycle times with this process, but also the very rapid solidification which is a consequence of the high pressure applied.
It is a technique that achieves very high contour precision and permits relatively narrow dimensional, shape and positional tolerances with considerable strength in thin-walled areas. For this process, gray cast iron cylinder liners are frequently integrally cast for the cylinder working surface, as the low-silicon hypoeutectic alloys in the die casting are not directly suitable for these surfaces.
For applications where the integral casting of cylinder liners can be dispensed with, KS Aluminium-Technologie employs its low-pressure casting process which is primarily tied to the hypereutectic alloy ALUSIL®.
